Peru Downs Paraguay on Gallardo's Goal
A stunning goal by Gianluca Lapadula sent Peru to the Copa America semifinals with a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Paraguay on Friday following a 3-3 draw in regulation and extra time.
The victory means Peru will face host nation Brazil in the semifinals on Monday.
After a scoreless first half, Paraguay took the lead in the second through Gustavo Gomez's header, but Gianluca Lapadula equalized for Peru 10 minutes later.
Paraguay regained the lead through Junior Alonso's header, but Peru's Andre Carrillo leveled the match again in the 85th minute.
In extra time, Paraguay's Miguel Almiron put his team ahead once more, but Peru's Yoshimar Yotun equalized in the final minute to force a penalty shootout.
Uruguay Beats Colombia 4–2 on Penalties
Uruguay advanced to the Copa America semifinals with a 4–2 penalty shootout win over Colombia on Saturday following a 0–0 draw after extra time.
Uruguay will now face Argentina in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Neither team could find a breakthrough in regulation time, and the match went to extra time, where both teams had chances to win but couldn't find the back of the net.
In the penalty shootout, Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved two penalties, while all four of Uruguay's takers converted their spot-kicks.
