SEOUL, South Korea - The United States and its allies have expressed their readiness to counter any potential threats from North Korea, following recent statements from Pyongyang indicating its willingness to use nuclear weapons.
"We are prepared to address any potential contingencies," said a spokesperson for the US Department of Defense. "We remain committed to defending our allies and ensuring the security of the Korean Peninsula."
The South Korean government has also issued a warning, urging Pyongyang to refrain from any provocative actions.
"North Korea's nuclear threats pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability," said a statement from the South Korean Foreign Ministry. "We strongly condemn North Korea's provocative rhetoric and call on them to engage in meaningful dialogue."
North Korea's Defense Minister, Ri Yong Gil, has warned the US that the deployment of nuclear assets in the region would be met with "swift and merciless" retaliation.
"The deployment of nuclear weapons by the United States is a clear and present danger to our country," said Ri. "We will not tolerate any such provocation and will take necessary measures to defend our sovereignty."
The United States has acknowledged the challenges in gaining UN support for measures to monitor North Korea's nuclear weapons program. However, it has expressed confidence that it can continue to work with its allies to address the threat posed by the North Korean regime.
